“When you make a choice, you change the future.”
– Deepak Chopra
Motivational guru. Celebrated author. Changer of lives. When someone with these credentials says something like that, you get a whole new perspective on life.
Surekha Bhor might not have heard of Deepak Chopra. But the way she has lived her life, is a testament to her strength in the face of adversity.
An adversity known as HER2 Breast Cancer.
A rare type of breast cancer, Surekha came to know she was affected by HER2, in November 2014. When she was 8 months pregnant with her third child. From that moment on began her tryst with Lady Destiny, who was bent on throwing trial after trial in Surekha’s way. Happiness, despair, treatment expenses, children’s future, friends or family – Surekha, through her journey, was faced with the dilemma of choosing between alternatives most of us would buckle under, or probably not even have the courage to imagine.
But she fought.
With every bit of nerve. With every little speck of spirit she could muster. With her family rallying behind her, Surekha chose to keep hope on her side. And not give in.
“The cancer happened shook my belief in God. Why would He have put me through this, and everything that came after it? For me, from that moment on, fate was all I believed in. I was given this as a test. A test of what I was capable of. God was not going to help me; I had to go through this myself.
And I did.”
This is probably what Mr. Chopra was talking about. Taking control. Not giving up. And creating a future, with today’s choices. And who else would know it better, but Surekha.
