Full Report by CSE – Indian Bread, Pizza and Burger Contain Harmful Chemicals – Save yourself from Cancer

The biggest bad news that has given shock to a lot of people whose morning is tasteless without Bread, toast & Sandwich. Centre For Science And Environment revealed a shocking fact by analyzing the bread, that around 84% of the bread brands in Delhi, cook breads with chemicals that cause Cancer.

CSE checked around 38 famous brands who make breads including pav and buns. The result, they got is positive. Means the bread actually contains Potassium Bromate and Potassium Iodate that cause Cancer. These chemicals are banned in most of the countries including our neighbor Sri Lanka. They have listed these chemicals as “Hazardous”for the health of the public, said a report of CSE.

How much Dangerous these chemicals are?

CSE said that the both chemicals are very much dangerous. One of those chemicals is from 2B carcinogen category (Carcinogenic to humans) and the other could be the reason for thyroid disorders. Still India hasn’t banned these chemicals.

A number of big brands including Britannia, Harvest Gold and the fast food chains -KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Subway, McDonald’s and Slice of Italy have tasted by CSE. In result, Britannia, KFC, Domino’s, McDonald’s and Subway have denied that non of the chemical described above were used in their products.

After seen this shocking report of CSE, J P Nadda, Health Minister of India said,

We are seized of the matter. I have told my officials to report to me on an urgent basis. There is no need to panic. Very soon we will come out with the (probe) report.

What Analysis Report says?

Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) from CSE have checked varieties of pre-packaged bread, pav and buns, ready-to-eat burger bread and ready-to-eat pizza bread from Delhi’s various well-known food selling outlets.

And after working on this matter, deputy director general, CSE, Mr. Chandra Bhushan said,

We found 84 percent samples positive with potassium bromate or iodate. We re-confirmed the presence of potassium bromate or iodate in a few samples through an external third-party laboratory. We checked the labels and talked to industry and scientists.Our study confirms the widespread use of potassium bromate or iodate as well as the presence of bromate or iodate residues in the final product.

Around 84% means 32 samples from 38, found positive that contains potassium bromate or iodate in the range of 1.15-22.54 parts per million (ppm).

This is not the end, more than 79% samples of packaged bread, white bread, pav, bun, ready-to-eat pizza bread and 75% samples of ready-to-eat burger bread were positive.

CSE also stated, “High levels of potassium bromate/iodate were found in sandwich bread, pav, bun and white bread” involving virtually all top brands. FSSAI has moved to remove potassium bromate and potassium iodate from food additives allowed in India.”
